Let’s Build It, Step by Step

Step 1. Hold the needle still and stroke the magnet along it in one direction only — from the eye to the point. Do this about 40 to 50 times. Always lift the magnet away and start from the same end again.
Step 2. Ask a grown-up to cut a thin slice of cork, about as thick as your finger.
Step 3. Lay the magnetised needle flat on top of the cork. You can rest it in a tiny groove or tape it down gently.
Step 4. Float the cork in the middle of your bowl of water and let go. Wait quietly… the needle will slowly spin and stop, pointing one way.
Step 5. Check it against a real compass or a map app. One end of your needle is now pointing roughly north!
