Write secret messages that only become visible under a special light β like a real spy! This works with materials you have at home.
What You’ll Need
π§ Tonic water (contains quinine β the magic ingredient!)
ποΈ Cotton swab or thin brush
π White paper
π¦ UV blacklight (in toy stores or online for $10)
How to Do It
1. Dip the cotton swab in tonic water.
2. Write your secret message on the paper using the tonic water as ink.
3. Let it dry completely β about 5 minutes. The message becomes INVISIBLE!
4. Hand the paper to your secret agent friend.
5. In a dark room, shine the UV blacklight on the paper.
6. SURPRISE! The message glows bright blue! π
Why Tonic Water Glows
Tonic water contains a chemical called quinine (originally used as a medicine for malaria!). Quinine has a special property β it fluoresces under UV light.
Fluorescent materials absorb invisible UV light and convert it into visible light. That’s why a black light makes some things glow!
