Some nights the moon is a big bright circle. Other nights it’s a thin curved sliver. Sometimes you can’t see it at all! Does the moon really change shape? Let’s solve this mystery!
The Moon Doesn’t Really Change
Surprise! The moon is always exactly the same size and shape β a big round ball. What changes is how much of it we can see lit up by the sun.
The Sun’s Spotlight
Here’s the secret: the moon does not make its own light. It’s like a giant mirror β it just reflects light from the sun.
Only half of the moon is ever lit by the sun at any time. The other half is in shadow. As the moon orbits Earth, we see different amounts of the lit side.
The 8 Phases of the Moon
π New Moon: The lit side faces away from Earth β we see nothing.
π Waxing Crescent: A small sliver appears.
π First Quarter: We see half the lit side (a half moon).
π Waxing Gibbous: Most of the lit side is visible.
π Full Moon: The entire lit side faces Earth β a bright circle!
π Waning Gibbous: Starts shrinking back.
π Last Quarter: Half visible again, but the other side.
π Waning Crescent: Just a sliver left.
Then back to New Moon! The whole cycle takes about 29.5 days.
Fun Moon Facts
π The moon moves about 3.8 cm away from Earth every year!
π¨βπ Only 12 humans have ever walked on the moon β and they all came back safely.
π¦ You’d weigh 6 times less on the moon. A 30 kg kid would weigh only 5 kg!
Next time you look at the moon, you’ll know β it’s not changing shape, it’s playing peek-a-boo with the sun! β¨
