We spend about a third of our lives sleeping. That’s like spending 27 years asleep in an average life! Why does the body need so much rest? It turns out β sleep is when your body does its most important work.
What Happens While You Sleep
π§ Memory storage: Your brain reviews and stores everything you learned that day
πͺ Body repair: Your muscles, skin, and bones grow and heal
π§Ή Brain cleaning: Your brain washes away waste chemicals built up during the day
π¦ Immune boost: Your body makes infection-fighting cells
π Growth (for kids): Growth hormone is mostly released during sleep!
π― Hormone reset: Hunger, mood, and energy hormones rebalance
The 4 Stages of Sleep
π€ Stage 1: Drifting off (5 minutes)
π€ Stage 2: Light sleep (50% of the night)
π€ Stage 3: Deep sleep (where physical repair happens)
π€ REM sleep: When you dream β brain super-active!
You cycle through all 4 stages about every 90 minutes. That’s why you naturally wake up every 1.5 hours or so β usually you go back to sleep.
