Two people sit outside in summer. One gets covered in mosquito bites. The other? Not a single one. WHY do some humans seem to be mosquito magnets while others are ignored? Science has answers!
It’s About Smell
Female mosquitoes (only females bite β they need blood for eggs!) hunt by smell. They use special receptors to detect chemicals that come off our skin and breath.
Some people produce more of these attractive chemicals than others. That’s why some get bitten more.
What Attracts Mosquitoes Most
π« Carbon dioxide β Mosquitoes can smell COβ from your breath up to 50 meters away! People who breathe more (during exercise, larger people) attract more mosquitoes.
π§ Sweat β Especially lactic acid in sweat
πΊ Beer drinking β Studies confirmed: beer drinkers attract MORE mosquitoes (no one’s sure why)
π©Έ Blood type O β Type O attracts twice as many mosquitoes as type A!
π‘οΈ Body heat β Warmer people attract more mosquitoes
π©· Wearing dark colors β Mosquitoes find dark clothes easier to see
π€° Pregnancy β Pregnant people emit more COβ and run warmer
π¦ Your skin microbiome β The unique mix of bacteria on your skin produces different smells
What Repels Mosquitoes
πΏ DEET (in bug sprays) β confuses their smell receptors
π³ Picaridin β also blocks scent
π¨ Wind/fans β they can’t fly well in strong wind
π―οΈ Citronella, lemongrass, eucalyptus β natural repellents (less strong than DEET)
Why Mosquito Bites Itch
When a mosquito bites, she injects a tiny bit of saliva into your skin. This saliva contains chemicals that:
1οΈβ£ Stop your blood from clotting (so she can drink it)
2οΈβ£ Numb the area (so you don’t feel her right away)
Your immune system fights back against the saliva β that’s the histamine response that causes itching and swelling.
Mosquito Records
π¦ Mosquitoes have been on Earth for 226 million years
π¦ They kill more humans per year than ANY other animal (via diseases like malaria)
π¦ They can fly up to 2 km from where they were born
π¦ A female mosquito can lay 100+ eggs per batch
π¦ Mosquitoes don’t actually have teeth β they have a needle-like mouthpart called a proboscis
How to Get Less Bitten
π Wear light colors and cover your skin
πΏ Shower after exercise
π« Avoid being outside at dawn and dusk (peak mosquito hours)
π¨ Sit near a fan
π Use mosquito netting at night
Some people just have more attractive blood-meal chemistry. It’s not fair, but it’s science! π¦
