It’s About Smell
Female mosquitoes (only females bite — they need blood for eggs!) hunt by smell. They use special receptors to detect chemicals that come off our skin and breath.
Some people produce more of these attractive chemicals than others. That’s why some get bitten more.
What Attracts Mosquitoes Most
🫁 Carbon dioxide — Mosquitoes can smell CO₂ from your breath up to 50 meters away! People who breathe more (during exercise, larger people) attract more mosquitoes.
💧 Sweat — Especially lactic acid in sweat
🍺 Beer drinking — Studies confirmed: beer drinkers attract MORE mosquitoes (no one’s sure why)
🩸 Blood type O — Type O attracts twice as many mosquitoes as type A!
🌡️ Body heat — Warmer people attract more mosquitoes
🩷 Wearing dark colors — Mosquitoes find dark clothes easier to see
🤰 Pregnancy — Pregnant people emit more CO₂ and run warmer
🦠 Your skin microbiome — The unique mix of bacteria on your skin produces different smells
What Repels Mosquitoes
🌿 DEET (in bug sprays) — confuses their smell receptors
🌳 Picaridin — also blocks scent
💨 Wind/fans — they can’t fly well in strong wind
🕯️ Citronella, lemongrass, eucalyptus — natural repellents (less strong than DEET)
Why Mosquito Bites Itch
When a mosquito bites, she injects a tiny bit of saliva into your skin. This saliva contains chemicals that:
1️⃣ Stop your blood from clotting (so she can drink it)
2️⃣ Numb the area (so you don’t feel her right away)
Your immune system fights back against the saliva — that’s the histamine response that causes itching and swelling.
