Volcanoes are some of the most powerful things on Earth. But what exactly makes them erupt with such force?
Hot Stuff Underground
Deep inside our planet, there’s a layer called the mantle, where rock is so hot it has melted into a gooey, super-hot liquid called magma. The temperature down there is over 1,000Β°C β hot enough to melt almost anything!
Pressure Building Up
Think of a soda bottle that’s been shaken hard. When you finally open it, the pressure pushes the soda out fast. A volcano works in a similar way!
Magma builds up underground over many years. Gases like steam and carbon dioxide get trapped inside the magma. The pressure keeps growing… and growing… until it has nowhere to go but UP! π₯
BOOM! The Eruption
When the pressure becomes too much, the volcano erupts. The magma bursts out the top and becomes lava (the name changes once it’s above ground). Ash, rock, and hot gases shoot up into the sky!
Cool Volcano Facts
π There are about 1,500 active volcanoes in the world.
π Most volcanoes are actually under the ocean, where you can’t see them.
ποΈ Hawaii was made by volcanoes! New islands are still forming today.
So the next time someone tells you the Earth is just dirt and rocks, you’ll know better β there’s a wild, fiery world underneath your feet!
