The Walking Water Experiment πŸ’§

Explore, Discover, Learn

Can water walk between glasses? Yes, it can! And it makes a beautiful colorful display. Try this amazing science experiment with help from a grown-up.

What You’ll Need

πŸ₯› 6 clear glasses (all the same size)

🎨 Red, yellow, and blue food coloring

🧻 6 paper towels

πŸ’§ Water

Step-by-Step

1. Line up the 6 glasses in a row.

2. Fill glasses 1, 3, and 5 with water (skip the others).

3. Add red food coloring to glass 1, yellow to glass 3, and blue to glass 5.

4. Fold each paper towel into a long strip.

5. Place one end of a paper towel in glass 1 and the other end in glass 2. Do the same for the rest β€” connecting each glass to the next.

6. Now wait. After 15 minutes you’ll see something amazing! 🀩

What Happens?

The colored water slowly “walks” up the paper towels and drips into the empty glasses. Even better β€” when red and yellow meet, they make ORANGE! Yellow + blue = GREEN! It’s like magic!

Why Does This Happen?

Paper towels are made of tiny fibers with little gaps between them. Water gets pulled into those gaps through a process called capillary action. The same thing happens in plants β€” water travels up from the roots to the leaves the same way!

Try This Next

🌈 Try using a Q-tip instead of paper towel β€” does it still work?

🌑️ Try with warm water vs cold water β€” which one walks faster?

Science is everywhere β€” even in a kitchen towel! πŸ§ͺ
