Lava lamps are super cool β globs of color floating up and down like a slow-motion lightshow. Let’s make one ourselves using stuff from the kitchen!
What You’ll Need
πΆ A clear plastic bottle or jar
π§ Water
π’οΈ Vegetable oil
π¨ Food coloring (any color)
π An effervescent tablet (like an Alka-Seltzer)
π¦ Optional: a flashlight
How to Make It
1. Fill the bottle about 1/4 with water.
2. Pour in vegetable oil until the bottle is almost full. The oil will float on top of the water.
3. Add 8-10 drops of food coloring. Watch as the drops sink through the oil and join the water below!
4. Drop in HALF of an effervescent tablet.
5. Watch the magic begin! π
What’s Happening?
The tablet sinks down into the water and starts fizzing, creating bubbles of carbon dioxide gas. Each bubble grabs some colored water and carries it up through the oil β like an elevator!
When the bubble reaches the top, it pops, and the colored water drops back down. It looks just like a real lava lamp!
Why Don’t Oil and Water Mix?
Oil and water don’t mix because they have different molecules. Water molecules love each other and stick together. Oil molecules also stick to each other, but they don’t like water. So they always separate!
Also, oil is less dense than water, which is why it floats on top.
Try More Versions

π¦ Shine a flashlight behind it in a dark room β gorgeous!
