Tiny instrument, BIG sound! Build your own kazoo from a popsicle stick and a rubber band β and learn how vibrations make music!
What You’ll Need
πͺ΅ 2 large popsicle sticks (or thin wooden tongue depressors)
πͺ 1 wide rubber band
π¦ 2 small rubber bands
π Optional: ruler
How to Build It
1. Stack the 2 popsicle sticks together flat.
2. Stretch the WIDE rubber band lengthwise around BOTH sticks β like the string of a stringed instrument.
3. Cut a small piece of straw or paper, about 2 cm long. Slide it between the sticks at ONE end.
4. At the OTHER end, slide in another small piece of straw to spread the sticks apart.
5. Now wrap a small rubber band around each end to hold everything together.
6. Hold the ‘sandwich’ to your lips, blow hard through the gap β BUZZZZZZ! πΊ
How It Makes Sound
When you blow air through the gap, the air rushes past the rubber band β and the rubber band vibrates super fast.
Those vibrations travel through the air to your ears as sound waves. Your brain interprets the vibrations as sound!
The Faster, the Higher
πΆ Faster vibrations = higher pitched sound
πΆ Slower vibrations = lower pitched sound
Try:
π΅ Different rubber band tightness β tighter = higher pitch
π΅ Different rubber band thickness β thicker = lower pitch
π΅ Different blowing speeds β faster blow = louder
The Science of Music
Every musical instrument uses vibration to make sound:
π» Violin strings vibrate
πΊ Trumpet β your lips vibrate
π₯ Drum skins vibrate
πΉ Piano strings vibrate when hammers hit them
πΈ Guitar strings vibrate when plucked
π€ Even your voice β vocal cords are tiny vibrating strings in your throat!
Build a Whole Band
Try making different-sized sound sandwiches and arrange them by pitch:
π Long sticks + thick rubber band = low note (bass)
π Medium sticks = mid note
π Short sticks + thin rubber band = high note (treble)
Now you have your own one-person band! Add a marching drum (oatmeal container) and a comb-and-paper kazoo and you’ve got a marching parade. π
π΅ Sound is just air dancing β and now you control the dance!
