Did you know you can grow real crystals at home β like a tiny garden of gems? Let’s do this fun experiment!
What You’ll Need
πΆ A clear glass jar
π§ Epsom salt (about 1 cup)
π§ Hot water (with a grown-up’s help!)
π¨ Food coloring (optional)
πͺ¨ Small clean pebbles or pipe cleaners (optional)
β° Patience!
How to Grow Crystals
1. Put 1 cup of hot water into the jar.
2. Slowly add Epsom salt, stirring after each spoonful. Keep adding until no more will dissolve (the salt sinks to the bottom).
3. Add a few drops of food coloring if you want colorful crystals.
4. (Optional) Place pebbles or pipe cleaners in the jar for crystals to grow on.
5. Place the jar somewhere it won’t be disturbed.
6. Wait! In a few hours, you’ll see tiny crystals starting to form. In 24 hours, they’ll be amazing! β¨
What’s Happening?
Hot water can hold more salt dissolved in it than cold water. When you saturate the water with salt and then let it cool, the water can’t hold all that salt anymore.
The extra salt comes back out β but in a special, organized way. The salt molecules join together in beautiful patterns called crystals!
Crystals in the Real World
π Diamonds, emeralds, and rubies are all crystals β they took millions of years to form deep underground!
βοΈ Snowflakes are crystals too! Every snowflake is unique.
π§ Even table salt is a tiny crystal β look at a grain through a magnifying glass!
Try Different Substances
π¬ Make sugar crystals (rock candy!) β they take about a week
π Borax crystals β bigger and faster
βοΈ Salt crystals β clear and beautiful
Tip: The slower the water evaporates, the bigger and more perfect the crystals will grow!
You’re now an official crystal gardener! ππ
