The Wood Frog Magic Trick
When temperatures drop below freezing, the wood frog does something almost no other animal can:
1️⃣ Its heart stops beating ❤️
2️⃣ Its breathing stops 💨
3️⃣ Up to 70% of its body water turns to ice 🧊
4️⃣ It looks completely dead
5️⃣ It stays this way for weeks or months
6️⃣ When spring warms it up, it thaws, the heart starts beating again, and the frog hops away like nothing happened!
How Doesn’t It Die?
Normally, when cells freeze, ice crystals form INSIDE the cells and pop them — killing them. But wood frogs have a secret weapon: they flood their cells with sugar (glucose).
The sugar acts like antifreeze! Ice forms only between cells, not inside them. The cells stay safe and undamaged.
It’s literally biological antifreeze. The frog turns its own blood into super-sweet syrup before freezing!
