Crows are some of the smartest birds in the world. They remember people who have been mean to them β and they remember for YEARS. They even tell other crows!
The Famous Crow Experiment
Scientists at the University of Washington wore scary masks while catching wild crows for tagging (then releasing them). For YEARS afterward, when researchers wore those same masks in public, crows would dive-bomb and scold them. Even crows born AFTER the experiment knew to hate that mask β they learned from their parents and other crows!
Other Smart Crow Things
π§ Crows use tools β they bend wires into hooks to fish food out of holes
π§ Crows can solve multi-step puzzles (use one tool to get another tool to get food)
π§ They can recognize themselves in mirrors
π§ They count up to 6 reliably
π§ They remember thousands of food hiding spots
Crows Hold Funerals
When a crow dies, other crows often gather around the body β silent and unmoving. Scientists believe they’re learning about the death so they can avoid the danger. They might even remember the human responsible for the death!
Crows Can Be Pets… Sort Of
If you feed crows kindly, they remember and may bring you gifts in return β coins, shiny rocks, buttons, even broken jewelry! Some crow-friend humans have collections of crow-gifts they’ve received over the years.
Crow Vocabulary
Crows make 250+ different sounds. They use different calls for: ‘food here,’ ‘danger,’ ‘come to me,’ and ‘this person is mean.’ Studies suggest they recognize individual crows’ voices.
Crow Records
π¦ Longest lifespan in captivity: 59 years (Tata the crow)
π Found on every continent except Antarctica
π§ Brain-to-body ratio similar to chimpanzees
Be nice to crows β they remember! And they tell their kids. π¬
