Make a Cloud in a Jar! ⛅

Explore, Discover, Learn

You can make a real cloud — in your kitchen! All you need are a few simple things and a curious mind. Let’s see weather happen up close!

What You’ll Need

🍶 A clear glass jar with lid

🔥 Hot water (with a grown-up’s help)

🧊 An ice cube or two

💨 Aerosol hairspray (or matches with adult supervision)

How to Do It

1. Pour a small amount of hot water into the jar (about 2 cm deep).

2. Quickly spray a tiny puff of hairspray into the jar (or have an adult drop in a freshly blown-out match — the smoke matters!).

3. Immediately close the lid.

4. Place an ice cube on top of the lid.

5. Watch — a cloud forms inside! ☁️

How It Works

Real clouds need 3 ingredients: warm air with water vapor, cool air, and tiny particles. The hot water adds steam (water vapor). The ice on top cools the air. The hairspray (or smoke) gives the water vapor something to cling to.

When water vapor meets cool air and finds particles to stick to, it condenses — forming tiny water droplets we call a cloud!

Cool Cloud Facts

☁️ A regular cumulus cloud weighs about 500 tons!

☁️ The fastest clouds (cirrus) can fly at 250 km/h

☁️ Cloud droplets are 1,000 times smaller than a raindrop

Now you’ve made weather in a jar! 🌦️
