Watch a seed wake up and become a plant before your eyes β without even needing soil! It’s a magical week-long experiment.
What You’ll Need
π« Dried beans (any kind β pinto, kidney, black, lima)
𧻠Paper towels
ποΈ A clear plastic zip-bag
π§ Water
π Tape
How to Do It
1. Soak 4β5 beans in water overnight.
2. Wet a paper towel β damp, not dripping.
3. Fold it and place inside the zip-bag.
4. Place the beans on the paper towel inside the bag, spaced apart.
5. Seal the bag (leave a small air gap).
6. Tape it to a window with lots of light.
7. Watch every day! Within 2β3 days, you’ll see roots. By day 5β7, you’ll have full mini plants!
What’s Happening?
Inside every seed is a tiny baby plant called an embryo. It’s been waiting β sometimes for years β for the right conditions: water, warmth, and air.
When water reaches the seed:
1οΈβ£ The seed soaks it up and swells
2οΈβ£ The embryo activates and starts to grow
3οΈβ£ The seed splits open β the root pokes out first (always grows DOWN)
4οΈβ£ The shoot grows next (always grows UP)
Cool Experiment Extensions
π Flip a bean’s position β root now points up. Does it adjust? (Yes! Plants always know which way is down.)
π Put one bag in a dark closet β does the bean still grow? (Yes β it doesn’t need light to sprout. But it needs light to become green!)
β° Time how fast a bean grows compared to other seeds
Plants are stronger than they look β they can grow without soil for a while! πΏ
